how During our holiday assistance program we came in contact with many families who had a child on the autism spectrum. After speaking with the parents of these children, they all had very similar stories of challenges, lack of a support system and isolation. In response, we decided to try something new and give the parents a support group that resulted in solutions to their daily challenges. After contacting St. Stephen's church in Wyandotte concerning a meeting space, they were completely on board with our endeavor. This is a parent driven group, they discuss the challenges they need help with and come up with a group resolution and put it into action. The group will meet twice a month and we have generous local businesses and community members volunteering dinner and childcare for those in attendance. The parents will have some time to build their support group and define the needs of each family to find some solutions to these individual challenges. The parents and siblings are finding comfort in being with other people who actually understand them and live very similar lives. The children on the spectrum are finding comfort in being with friends who are similar to them and are not being set aside.
