The Puzzle Parent Group Mission Statement: To provide an opportunity for Downriver spectrum families to socialize and support each other
Mimi’s Mission offers Puzzle Parents, a parent-driven support group for Downriver families with children on the Autism Spectrum. The group meets on the first and third Mondays of each month for dinner, activities and demonstrations. At meetings, families discuss the challenges they face and come up with a group resolutions and action plans. Generous local businesses and community members volunteer to offer free childcare for those in attendance. The parents have some time to build their support group and define the needs of each family to find some solutions to the unique challenges of families with children on the spectrum. The parents and siblings are finding comfort in being with other people who actually understand them and live very similar lives. The children on the spectrum also find comfort in being with friends who are similar to them.
In addition to the group meetings, Mimi’s Mission presents two large events for the Puzzle Parents and their children, known as “Puzzle Kidz.” In April, Mimi’s Mission presents the Spectrum Spectacular, a unique art show for children on the Autism Spectrum held at River’s Edge Gallery in Wyandotte. In September, Mimi’s Mission presents the Magical Mile Walk for Autism Awareness and Spectrum Connection Resource Fair in Woodhaven.
